An innovative mapping tool

SERTIT will be responsible for producing mapping based on satellite images of flooding events and for analysing vulnerability in flood-prone areas.

The usefulness of satellite imagery in flood management, as a decision-support tool, has been demonstrated at local and national level. This technology has the advantage of being able to observe a flooding event quickly in its entirety in terms of geographical coverage, overcoming borders and areas that are difficult to access on the ground, and also of allowing temporal monitoring. The implementation of an emergency mapping system based on satellite imagery for the cross-border Lys river basin should make it possible to optimise cross-border coordination in terms of flood management there.

This system consists of :

–      Acquisition of pre- and post-event satellite images over the cross-border Lys basin.

–      Mapping of flooded areas and the impact of flooding on urban infrastructure for a past flood episode (prototype) and for a future event (operational demonstrator).

–      Mapping the evolution of vulnerability in flood-prone areas.
